About the author

After graduating from Washington University in 1890, he set off with fellow rider William Lewis Sachtleben on an around-the-world bicycle journey that lasted nearly three years. Their travels became the basis for Across Asia on a Bicycle, a popular adventure narrative that helped bring distant places and difficult overland travel to readers of the time.

The book stands out for its direct, on-the-road style. It captures long stretches across Asia, the novelty of bicycle travel in many regions they crossed, and the curiosity the two Americans met along the way. For listeners today, his writing offers both a travel adventure and a window into how late-19th-century explorers described the wider world.

Later in life, he appears to have settled in Britain, where records connect him with engineering work and with the invention of the Hydrautomat, a device for raising water. That unusual mix of traveler, writer, and inventor gives his career a distinctive shape, even though many personal details remain lightly documented.
