About the author

Born at Bala in 1837, Thomas Charles Edwards grew up in a family deeply connected to Welsh religious and intellectual life. He was the son of Lewis Edwards, founder of Bala Theological College, and he went on to study in London and at Oxford before becoming known as a preacher and scholar.

Edwards is best remembered as the first Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, serving from 1872 to 1891. In that role, he became an important figure in the early development of university education in Wales, helping to build the reputation of a new national institution.

Later in life he returned to Bala as principal of Bala Theological College. Alongside his work as an academic leader, he also wrote on religion and literature, and he remained a respected voice in Welsh Nonconformist culture until his death in 1900.
