About the author

Born in 1861, Tomáš Čapek became an important voice in Slovak American public life. He worked as a writer, journalist, editor, historian, and organizer, and is remembered for preserving the story of Slovak immigrants in the United States.

He spent much of his life in New York and was active in civic and cultural institutions serving Slovak communities. His writing explored both the historical roots of Slovaks and the experience of building a new life in America, making his books valuable records of immigrant history.

Čapek died in 1950. Today he is best known for helping give Slovak Americans a documented past and a stronger public identity through clear, committed historical and cultural writing.
