About the author

Born in King's Lynn, Norfolk, in 1820, he trained first as a coach painter before leaving for South Africa in his early twenties. Over time he built a reputation not only as an artist but also as an explorer, naturalist, and author, using sketches and paintings to record the landscapes, people, and expeditions he encountered.

He became especially known for his travels in southern Africa and Australia. His images were valued for their detail and immediacy, and they helped bring distant places to British audiences at a time when photography was still limited in the field. Alongside his artwork, he kept journals and wrote accounts of his journeys, which added to his reputation as a careful observer.

He died in Durban in 1875. Today he is remembered as a vivid chronicler of nineteenth-century exploration, with a legacy that sits somewhere between art, travel writing, and documentary record.
