About the author
Thomas Addis Emmet (1828–1919) was an American gynecologist, medical writer, and Irish-American activist. He studied medicine at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and became closely associated with New York’s Woman’s Hospital, eventually serving as its surgeon. His major medical work, The Principles and Practice of Gynaecology, first published in 1879, drew on his extensive clinical experience and became an important text in the field.
Emmet was also deeply interested in Irish history and his family’s political legacy. He served as president of the Irish National Federation of America from 1892 to 1901 and wrote The Emmet Family (1898), Ireland Under English Rule (1903), and Memoir of Thomas Addis and Robert Emmet (1915). Through these works, he helped preserve the history of his grandfather, the Irish patriot Thomas Addis Emmet, and his great-uncle Robert Emmet.
