Thomas A. M. Ward

A philosopher and writer who brings medieval thought into lively conversation with modern questions, his books explore John Duns Scotus, divine ideas, and the legacy of Stoicism. He writes with a scholar’s depth but a clear interest in why old ideas still matter now.

About the author

Thomas M. Ward is a philosophy professor at the University of Texas at Austin in the School of Civic Leadership. His work focuses on the history of philosophy and theology, especially the Middle Ages, and he has written or translated several books on those subjects.

His published books include After Stoicism: Last Words of the Last Roman Philosopher, Ordered by Love: An Introduction to John Duns Scotus, Divine Ideas, and a translation with commentary of John Duns Scotus’s Treatise on the First Principle. Across this work, he returns often to big themes like love, reason, happiness, and how older traditions can still speak to present-day life.

Ward’s writing is especially suited to listeners who enjoy thoughtful nonfiction with a strong historical backbone. Even when he is dealing with demanding philosophical material, his work is grounded in enduring human questions rather than abstract scholarship alone.
