Thistle Anderson

A sharp-tongued Scottish-born writer and actress, she became famous for turning Edwardian Adelaide into the target of a witty social takedown. Her best-known book, Arcadian Adelaide, caused a stir in 1905 and still stands out for its bite and humor.

About the author

Born in Scotland, Thistle Anderson built a reputation as both an actress and a writer, and later became widely known as Mrs Herbert Fisher. Sources describe her as well educated, much travelled, and fond of adventure, with a lively public presence that made her hard to ignore.

After marrying Adelaide stockbroker Herbert Fisher in London in 1901, she returned to Adelaide in 1903 and moved through local society with a famously critical eye. That experience fed into Arcadian Adelaide, published in 1905, a satirical portrait of the city that brought her notoriety and lasting literary attention.

Today, she is remembered less as a conventional society figure than as a bold, funny observer who delighted in provoking respectable opinion. Her work survives because it captures both the manners of its time and the pleasure of a well-aimed barb.
