1703–1758
A lively but troubled figure of 18th-century London theater, he was known as an actor, playwright, and manager with a gift for comedy and a life as dramatic as the roles he played. Remembered in part for his connection to the famous Cibber acting family, he also left behind a handful of plays and adaptations of his own.

Born in London in 1703, he was the son of actor-manager and later Poet Laureate Colley Cibber. He grew up in a theatrical family and built his own career on the stage as an actor, playwright, and theater manager, becoming especially associated with comic roles.
His writing included plays, adaptations, and theatrical pieces produced during the busy world of 18th-century English theater. Accounts of his life often note that his personal affairs were highly public and frequently controversial, adding to a reputation that was almost as colorful as his stage work.
He died in 1758. Though he is not as well known today as some of his contemporaries, he remains a vivid example of the restless, competitive, and deeply personal world of Georgian performance.
