About the author

Born in Great Falls, Montana, in 1915, Theodore J. Walker was a biologist and author best known for his work on whales and other wildlife. He studied at Montana State University and the University of Oklahoma, later earning a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Walker worked as a research oceanographer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1948 to 1971 and also served as a naturalist with the U.S. Park Service. He became especially known for whale research, while also writing for general readers about nature, conservation, and animal life.

His books include Whale Primer and Red Salmon, Brown Bear, and his writing was shaped by firsthand time in the field. He died in Seattle in 2003, leaving behind a body of work that helped make marine science and wilderness study more approachable for a wide audience.
