About the author

Born on January 7, 1915, in Great Falls, Montana, Theodore J. Walker built his career as a biologist, oceanographer, and writer. He studied at Montana State University, earning a B.A. in 1938 and an M.S. in 1940, and later completed a Ph.D. at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1948.

Walker became especially known for his research on whales, while also writing for general audiences about wildlife and the sea. His books include Whale Primer, with Special Attention to the California Gray Whale and Red Salmon, Brown Bear: The Story of an Alaskan Lake, both shaped by his scientific background and his gift for making natural history readable.

He died in Seattle, Washington, on February 28, 2003, from complications following a stroke. Even in his short list of books, his curiosity about marine life and the broader natural world comes through clearly.
