by Johann Jakob Balmer, Theodor Meyer-Merian
Born in Basel on May 31, 1818, he was a Swiss author, editor, and publisher. He studied theology and philology in Basel, Göttingen, and Berlin, but turned mainly toward literature and journalism instead of church work.
He wrote poems, stories, and books on practical subjects, and he worked closely with family publishing projects. Sources available here describe him as an important figure in Basel literary life and note that he edited the family magazine Der Schweizerische Kinderfreund, contributing to the reading culture of German-speaking Switzerland.
He died in Basel on April 18, 1867. Though not widely known today, his work connects literature, education, and publishing in a way that gives a vivid glimpse of Swiss cultural life in the mid-1800s.
