Best known as a Dutch painter and designer, he also wrote lively short works on the history of Dutch folk costume. His books reflect the same visual eye that shaped his posters and book covers.

by Theodoor Molkenboer
Born in Leeuwarden on February 23, 1871, Theodoor "Theo" Molkenboer built his career in the arts as a painter and designer, especially of posters and book covers. He grew up in a highly creative family and later became known not only for his visual work but also for his interest in Dutch traditional dress.
Alongside his art, Molkenboer wrote several short works about the history of Dutch folk costumes. That mix of careful observation and design sense gives his writing a distinctive character: practical, visual, and rooted in cultural detail.
He died in Lugano on December 1, 1920. Today he is remembered as a versatile Dutch artist whose work moved easily between image, design, and cultural history.
