About the author

Born in 1870, Thomas Sturge Moore was an English poet, playwright, prose writer, and artist. He adopted the name “Sturge” to distinguish himself from the earlier poet Thomas Moore, and he was educated at Dulwich College as well as the Croydon and Lambeth art schools.

Moore became part of the wider artistic and literary world of his time, with strong links to figures including W. B. Yeats. Alongside his poetry and plays, he was known for visual work such as illustration and design, which gave much of his writing a carefully shaped, image-rich quality.

He died in 1944. Remembered as a versatile creative figure rather than only a poet, he stands out for the way he combined literature, drama, and visual art in one career.
