About the author

Thomas Rice Edward Holmes published mainly as T. Rice Holmes or T.R.E. Holmes. Born in County Westmeath, Ireland, in 1855, he was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and at Oxford, where he studied classics before moving into teaching and scholarship.

He is best remembered for major works on Julius Caesar, Caesar's campaigns, and the late Roman Republic. Contemporary reference sources describe his research on Caesar and the Gallic War as especially important, and he also wrote widely on Roman history beyond Caesar alone.

Holmes was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1925. He died in 1933, leaving behind a body of historical writing that remained well known to later students of Rome.
