About the author

Born in 1855 and active as a historian and classical scholar, T. Rice Holmes is chiefly remembered for major works on ancient history, especially Ancient Britain and the Invasions of Julius Caesar and The Roman Republic and the Founder of the Empire.

His writing focused on Rome, Caesar, and the historical setting of Britain before and during the Roman invasions. The surviving records available here show his work continued to be read long after his lifetime, including through library catalogs and Project Gutenberg editions.

Holmes died in 1933. For listeners who like history grounded in close reading and argument, his books offer an older but still energetic style of historical storytelling.
