About the author

Born in Montreal in 1861, Thomas James Macnamara was raised in Britain and trained as an elementary-school teacher. Before entering national politics, he worked in education and journalism, becoming well known through his involvement with teachers' organizations and the education press.

He was elected as a Liberal MP in 1900 and represented Camberwell for many years. During his parliamentary career he held a series of government posts, including work as Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty and later as Minister of Labour, building a reputation as a capable public servant as well as an advocate for education.

Macnamara's career is especially interesting because he came from the teaching profession at a time when that was an unusual path into high office. Remembered as an educationalist as much as a politician, he stood at the meeting point of classroom reform, public debate, and government service in Edwardian and interwar Britain.
