About the author

Born in Tremadoc, North Wales, Lawrence studied history at Jesus College, Oxford, before working as an archaeologist for the British Museum at Carchemish in Syria. His years in the Middle East gave him a deep knowledge of the region’s languages, landscapes, and cultures.

During World War I, he served as a British intelligence officer and liaison to Arab forces led by Emir Faisal, supporting the revolt against the Ottoman Empire. After the war, he wrote Seven Pillars of Wisdom, later served in the Royal Air Force under assumed names, and published The Mint, an account of life in the ranks. He died in a motorcycle accident in Dorset on May 19, 1935.
