About the author

Born in Bowdon, Cheshire, on January 8, 1867, Thomas Alfred Coward became known as an English ornithologist, natural history writer, and amateur astronomer. He wrote widely about birds, local history, and the wildlife of Cheshire, and his work earned him a lasting place in British nature writing.

Coward was closely associated with Manchester Museum and was remembered by later writers as one of the leading field naturalists of northern England. He also published influential books on British birds and migration, helping general readers take a deeper interest in observing animals in the wild.

He died on January 29, 1933. Although many details of his life are now mainly remembered by specialists, his books still reflect a patient, observant way of looking at nature that feels approachable today.
