About the author

Born in Auburndale, Massachusetts, in 1890, Sydney Aylmer Clark graduated from Dartmouth College in 1912 and worked as a teacher and in business before becoming a full-time travel writer. Travel had been part of his life from childhood, and over the years he built a career out of visiting places himself and then explaining them clearly for others.

Clark became known for a long run of travel books, including destination guides and his popular "All the Best in..." series. He wrote about places across Europe, Latin America, the Pacific, and beyond, aiming to help ordinary travelers get the most from a trip rather than simply admire a place from afar.

He died in 1975 in Massachusetts. At the time of his death, he was reportedly working on an autobiography, a fitting final project for a writer whose life and work were so closely tied to movement, curiosity, and the pleasures of seeing the wider world.
