About the author

Born in Massachusetts in 1839, Gustavus Franklin Swift started young in the meat business and went on to found Swift & Company. He moved the business to Chicago in the 1870s, where access to rail lines and livestock helped it grow quickly.

Swift is widely remembered for backing practical refrigerated railcars, which made it possible to ship dressed beef long distances instead of sending live cattle. That shift helped reshape the American meat industry and made his company one of the major names associated with the Chicago stockyards.

He died in 1903, but his name remained closely tied to one of the best-known food companies of its era. For readers interested in business history, industrial America, or the rise of modern food distribution, his story offers a clear look at how one idea can transform an entire market.
