About the author

Born as Sushil Chandra Chakravarty in Calcutta in 1874, he was drawn early to spiritual life and became associated with the circle around Sri Ramakrishna’s disciples. He later joined the Ramakrishna Order and was initiated into sannyasa by Swami Vivekananda, becoming known as Swami Prakashananda.

He traveled to the United States in the early 20th century to assist the work of Vedanta in San Francisco. After the death of Swami Trigunatitananda, he took on a leading role there and helped strengthen the society through lectures, teaching, and pastoral work. He is also remembered for books such as The Inner Consciousness and The Universality of Vedanta, which present Vedanta in a clear, practical way.

He died in San Francisco in 1927. Today he is remembered as one of the early monks who helped establish Vedanta on American soil while remaining deeply connected to the spiritual ideals of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda tradition.
