He is a consultant vascular surgeon associated with the Royal Free Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. The Royal Free says he qualified in Glasgow, trained at the Royal Free Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard School of Medicine, and was appointed to his first consultant post in 1987.

He has also held academic leadership roles, including a professorship in vascular surgery at University College London. Across his clinical and teaching work, he is especially known for vascular surgery in both adult and pediatric settings.
