Born in 1885 in Kushtia, in Bengal, Surendranath Dasgupta became one of the most respected interpreters of Indian philosophy in the twentieth century. He studied Sanskrit and philosophy in Calcutta and built a career as a scholar, teacher, and writer whose work reached readers both in India and abroad.

His best-known achievement is A History of Indian Philosophy, a major five-volume study that helped introduce many readers to the depth and variety of Indian philosophical traditions. He also wrote on yoga, Vedanta, and other schools of thought, with a gift for combining close textual scholarship with a broad, readable sense of intellectual history.
