About the author

Born on October 18, 1885, in Kushtia in Bengal, Surendranath Dasgupta grew into one of the most important interpreters of Indian philosophy in the early twentieth century. He studied in Calcutta, mastered Sanskrit and philosophy, and built a career as a scholar whose work connected traditional learning with modern academic study.

Dasgupta is best remembered for his five-volume A History of Indian Philosophy, a major survey that introduced generations of readers to the many schools of Indian thought. He also wrote on Yoga, Vedanta, and Indian religious and philosophical traditions more broadly, with a style that aimed to be rigorous while still accessible to serious readers.

He taught at the University of Calcutta and later served as a professor in Europe, helping bring Indian philosophy into wider international conversation. He died in 1952, leaving behind a body of work that still matters to students interested in how India’s philosophical traditions developed and spoke to one another.
