About the author

Born in Hempstead, New York, in 1863, Stuart Merrill spent much of his youth in Paris, where he was educated and drawn into literary circles that would shape his career. Though American by birth, he wrote mainly in French and became closely associated with the Symbolist poets.

His best-known books include Les Gammes (1887), Les Fastes (1891), and Petits Poèmes d'Automne (1895). Readers often remember his poetry for its delicacy, emotional intensity, and attention to sound and mood rather than straightforward narrative.

Merrill also lived for a time in Belgium and remained connected to the wider European literary world. He died in Versailles in 1915, leaving behind a body of work that reflects both his American origins and his deep place within French Symbolism.
