About the author

Born in 1848, Stuart Johnson Reid was a British reviewer, writer, and publisher. Contemporary and library sources describe him as active in literary journalism and publishing, and note that he also contributed articles to the Dictionary of National Biography.

He is best known for biographies and historical studies of prominent nineteenth-century figures. Among the works associated with him are A Sketch of the Life and Times of the Rev. Sydney Smith, Lord John Russell, and Life and Letters of the First Earl of Durham. His writing shows a strong interest in public life, reform politics, and the personalities behind major events.

An obituary published in The Times reported that he died at his home in East Grinstead in 1927, aged 78. Taken together, the surviving records present him as a solid Victorian-era literary figure whose books helped shape how later readers encountered leading statesmen and churchmen of the age.
