About the author

Born on April 29, 1867, Stewardson Brown was an American botanist who served as curator of the herbarium at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. He is remembered both for his scientific work and for writing about plants in a way that opened the subject to general readers.

His fieldwork took him to places including the New Jersey Pine Barrens, the Florida Keys, Bermuda, and the Canadian Rockies. That experience fed into works such as Alpine Flora of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, a book that reflects his close attention to landscape, seasonal change, and plant life.

Brown died on March 14, 1921. Though not a widely known literary figure today, his writing still offers a vivid link between early American natural history and the pleasure of exploring the outdoors.
