Born in Wisconsin on November 4, 1906, Sterling North grew up near Edgerton, and his early life later became the heart of his most famous book, Rascal. That 1963 memoir, about raising a pet raccoon in 1918, became a bestseller and helped make him a lasting name in children's literature.
North wrote for both children and adults, with other well-known works including So Dear to My Heart and The Wolfling. Alongside his work as an author, he was also active as a literary editor and reviewer, bringing a broad love of books to his career.
He died on December 21, 1974, but his writing still stands out for its warmth, humor, and vivid sense of place. Readers who enjoy stories about nature, boyhood, and everyday adventure often find that his books still feel fresh and inviting.
