About the author

Born in Vium, Jutland, in 1782, he was the son of a parish priest and grew up in the rural world that would later shape so much of his writing. He studied theology, worked as a teacher, and eventually became a Lutheran pastor, while steadily building a literary career alongside his church duties.

He became one of the most distinctive Danish writers of the 19th century, especially known for his short stories, poems, and depictions of Jutland's people and landscape. Readers and critics have often noted the unusual blend in his work: a strong sense of place, psychological insight, and a realism that set him apart from many of his contemporaries.

His life was marked by personal and financial difficulties, and he died in 1848. Even so, his reputation endured, and he is still widely regarded as a major voice in Danish literature and an important early master of the short story.
