About the author

Born in Leicester on July 7, 1939, Stanley Henig studied at Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He went on to become one of the founder members of the Department of Politics at Lancaster University in 1964, later teaching at the University of Warwick, the Civil Service College, and the University of Central Lancashire, where he led the Department of Politics and European Studies.

Henig also had a public life beyond academia. He served as Labour MP for Lancaster from 1966 to 1970, and later remained active in public affairs, including service as Deputy Pro-Chancellor of Lancaster University from 2006 to 2011.

As a writer, he focused on British and European politics, with books including The Uniting of Europe, Power and Decision in Europe, Modernising British Government, and Federalism and the British. He was also described by the Federal Trust as a Senior Research Fellow, reflecting the strong connection between his scholarship and the practical questions of government and political reform.
