About the author

Born in Leicester in 1939, Stanley Henig is a British academic and former Labour politician. He studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and was one of the founders of the Department of Politics at Lancaster University in 1964. He later taught at the University of Warwick, the Civil Service College, and the University of Central Lancashire, where he led the Department of Politics and European Studies.

Henig was elected Labour MP for Lancaster in 1966 and served in the House of Commons until 1970. He later returned to public life in local government and led Lancaster City Council in the 1990s. Lancaster University also appointed him Deputy Pro-Chancellor, a role he held from 2006 to 2011.

As an author, he wrote widely on European politics, federalism, political parties, and the modernization of British government. That mix of scholarship and real political experience helps explain the practical, clear-minded tone readers often find in his work.
