About the author
Born Emma Lucy Wells in Nova Scotia on November 21, 1854, she later became known to readers as Stanford Eveleth. According to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, she spent parts of her early life in Maine and Prince Edward Island before marrying William John Dickson in 1872; the couple had five surviving children.
Her best-known work is Miss Dexie: A Romance of the Provinces, published in Toronto in 1895. Set during the American Civil War, the novel follows a family that moves to Canada to avoid the draft, and it is often noted for its lively social world and independent-minded heroine.
Although only one novel is firmly associated with her, her work has lasted long enough to be preserved by projects like Project Gutenberg and the Online Books Page. She died in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on March 19, 1926.
