About the author

Born in Brewer, Maine, in 1858, Sophie Miriam Swett became an American children's author and editor whose work reached a wide young audience. She was educated in Boston and was associated for a time with Wide Awake, a well-known juvenile magazine.

Swett wrote many books and stories for children, including Flying Hill Farm, The Littlest One of the Browns, and Stories of Maine. Her fiction often centers on family life, moral choices, and spirited young protagonists, while some of her work also reflects a strong interest in Maine history and local storytelling.

She died on November 12, 1912. Although she is not as widely remembered today as some of her contemporaries, her books remain part of the rich tradition of late 19th-century American writing for young readers.
