A prolific German novelist, poet, and painter, she wrote nearly fifty works that often wove together romance, history, and the landscapes of Franconia. Her life and writing also reflect the tensions faced by women artists in early 20th-century Germany.

by Sophie Hoechstetter
Born in Pappenheim, Bavaria, on August 15, 1873, Sophie Hoechstetter was a German writer, poet, and painter. She became known for an impressively large body of work, publishing almost fifty novels and novellas between the late 1890s and the early 1940s.
Her books often blended love stories, historical themes, and strong ties to her Franconian homeland. Alongside her writing, she also painted, making her part of a generation of women who worked across several arts while building a public literary career.
Hoechstetter died on April 4, 1943, near Dachau. Though less widely known today than some of her contemporaries, she remains an interesting figure in German literary history for both her productivity and the range of her creative work.
