Born Sophia Irvine Fox in Kentucky, Sophie Fox Sea was an American author associated with Lawrenceburg and later Louisville. Contemporary and later records identify her as the wife of Capt. Andrew McBrayer Sea, and a 1905 sketch in the Register of the Kentucky State Historical Society describes her as a prominent Kentucky writer active in literary and public life.
She wrote across more than one genre. Alongside the children’s book That Old-Time Child, Roberta: Her Home-Life on the Farm (1892), she was also credited with A Brief Synoptical Review of Slavery in the United States. That range suggests a writer who could move from affectionate, memory-filled scenes of rural life to more serious historical and civic subjects.
