Born in Paris on February 13, 1740, Madeleine-Sophie Arnould became one of the best-known French opera singers of her time. She trained as a young performer and went on to build her reputation at the Paris Opéra, where she was celebrated for her acting, musical intelligence, and striking personality.

Arnould was especially associated with French lyric tragedy and other major operatic works of the 18th century. Beyond the stage, she was also remembered for her sharp conversation and independent spirit, which made her a notable figure in Parisian cultural life.
