by Sophia Morrison
Born in 1859, Sophia Morrison was a Manx author, folklore collector, and cultural activist whose work is closely tied to the revival of Manx heritage. Rather than focusing only on writing, she devoted much of her energy to encouraging interest in the island’s language, stories, and traditions.
She is best known today for Manx Fairy Tales, published in 1911, a collection that helped keep traditional Manx stories alive for later generations. Her influence also reached beyond her own books, as she played an important part in the wider cultural movement that celebrated and preserved Manx identity.
Morrison died in 1917, but her legacy has lasted because of the way she gathered, shaped, and shared local folklore at a time when it might easily have been lost. For listeners interested in traditional storytelling, her work offers a vivid link to the Isle of Man’s imaginative world.
