About the author

Born in Peel on the Isle of Man in 1859, Sophia Morrison became one of the key figures in the Manx cultural revival. She was a writer, folklore collector, and energetic cultural activist whose work helped keep Manx traditions alive at a time when they were in danger of being lost.

She gathered stories directly from local people, supported the Manx language movement, and worked across literature, music, theatre, and publishing. Morrison was a founder member and active supporter of the Manx Language Society, and she later edited Mannin, a journal devoted to Manx culture.

Her best-known book is Manx Fairy Tales (1911), which remains a lasting doorway into the island's rich storytelling tradition. Beyond her own writing, her wider legacy lies in how much she encouraged others to value and record Manx heritage, making her an enduring presence in the cultural history of the Isle of Man.
