About the author

Sophia Kelly (1815–1899), who also appears as Sophia Sherwood and later Sophia Streeten, was the youngest child of army officer Captain Henry Sherwood and novelist Mary Martha Sherwood. She was born in India and became part of a literary family whose writing moved between domestic life, religion, and children's education.

She is especially remembered for editing The Life of Mrs. Sherwood, a biography drawn in part from family materials after her mother's death. She also collaborated with Mary Martha Sherwood on later works and is listed as the author or co-author of books including The Young Lord, and Other Tales and Brotherly Love.

Although not as famous as her mother, she had a real role in carrying that literary world forward — both by writing and by shaping how readers would remember Mary Martha Sherwood. For readers interested in Victorian family writing and children's literature, her work offers a useful glimpse into how authorship could be shared across generations.
