About the author

Born in Liverpool on 21 January 1840 and later knighted, Sir William Bower Forwood built his career as a merchant and shipowner before becoming a prominent figure in the city’s public life. He served in local politics for many years and is remembered as one of the Liverpool businessmen who helped raise money for major civic projects including the Liverpool Overhead Railway and Liverpool Cathedral.

Forwood also left a written record of the world he knew. His memoirs, including Recollections of a Busy Life and Reminiscences of a Liverpool Shipowner, 1850–1920, draw on his own experience of commerce, shipping, and municipal affairs. That makes his work especially valuable for readers interested in Victorian and Edwardian Liverpool as seen by someone deeply involved in its growth.

He died on 23 March 1928. For readers today, his appeal lies in the combination of personal memory and city history: his books do not just recount one man’s career, but capture the energy, ambition, and contradictions of a major port city in a time of rapid change.
