About the author

Born at Dunrobin Castle in 1580, Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun was the son of Alexander Gordon, 12th Earl of Sutherland. He studied at St Andrews, trained in law in France, and went on to serve in the orbit of King James VI and I, building a career that linked noble politics with royal service.

He is best known as the author of A Genealogical History of the Earldom of Sutherland, a major source for the history of his family and region. That work helped fix his reputation not simply as a courtier, but as a careful recorder of lineage, land, and political struggle in northern Scotland.

Gordon was later created a baronet and remained closely connected to Sutherland affairs through both family loyalty and public responsibility. For modern readers, his appeal lies in the way his life joins scholarship and statecraft: he did not just witness history, but worked to preserve it.
