About the author

Born in Woolwich, England, in 1791, Richard Henry Bonnycastle built his career in the Royal Engineers and became known for both military service and writing. He served in the Napoleonic era and later worked in British North America, where he was involved in fortifications and frontier defense.

He is especially remembered for his accounts of Canada in the 1840s, including Canada and the Canadians, which drew on his firsthand experience and offered detailed, sometimes opinionated observations about life, politics, and society in the colonies. That mix of soldier, engineer, and commentator gives his work its lasting interest.

Bonnycastle was knighted and died in 1847. Today he is mainly noted as a military figure and as an early writer whose books help capture how British North America looked to a well-informed but strongly individual observer.
