About the author

Born in Acle, Norfolk, in 1825, Sir Peter Eade built a distinguished medical career in Norwich and became consulting physician to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. He was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and his long public life made him well known far beyond the consulting room.

Eade was deeply involved in civic work in Norwich, serving as mayor and supporting local improvements and institutions. Accounts of his life credit him with helping to shape important parts of the city’s public life, including campaigns connected with Norwich Castle Museum and public open spaces.

He also wrote extensively, leaving behind works such as The Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, 1770–1900, Addresses and Papers, and an autobiography published after his death in 1915. Taken together, those writings show a doctor who cared about history, public life, and the communities around him as much as he cared about medicine.
