A leading Victorian physician in Norwich, he combined a long medical career with a strong interest in local history and left behind an autobiography published after his death. He was remembered strongly enough that the Norwich Medico-Chirurgical Society later named him as its first president.

by Sir Peter Eade
Born in 1825 and dying in 1915, Sir Peter Eade was a British doctor closely associated with Norwich. He trained in medicine and went on to build a prominent career there, becoming well known in the city’s professional and civic life.
Alongside his medical work, he also wrote about the institutions around him. His name is attached to The Norfolk & Norwich Hospital 1700 to 1900, and an autobiography of his life was published in 1916, shortly after his death.
The surviving records available here are brief, but they point to a figure who stood out both as a physician and as a chronicler of Norwich’s medical world. That mix of practice, public standing, and historical interest gives his work a special period flavor for modern listeners.
