About the author

Born in Livorno, Italy, in 1784 and raised in England, Moses Montefiore built a successful career as a stockbroker and financier before devoting much of his later life to public and charitable work. He became a well-known figure in Britain, served as Sheriff of London, and was created a baronet.

Montefiore is best remembered for using his wealth and influence to help Jewish communities facing persecution or hardship. He traveled on major missions to places including the Ottoman Empire, Russia, and Morocco, and he gave generously to projects connected with education, medicine, housing, and livelihoods, especially in the Holy Land.

He lived to the age of 100, dying in 1885, and was widely admired in his own lifetime. His legacy endures through the institutions he supported and through the image of a public leader who combined business success with deep religious commitment and practical philanthropy.
