About the author

Born in December 1775 and dying on January 16, 1852, he was an English landowner, banker, painter, and occasional author. He is best known as the 1st Baronet of Rodborough, a title created for him in 1821.

His creative work gives him a particularly interesting place among minor nineteenth-century figures. He painted mainly landscapes and horses, and surviving catalog records also connect him with travel writing and sporting subjects, suggesting a man deeply engaged with both country life and observation.

He is sometimes remembered in family history as the father of Sir John Dean Paul, 2nd Baronet, but his own career stands out for its mix of business, art, and writing. That combination makes him feel less like a purely formal titled figure and more like a well-rounded Regency gentleman with strong personal interests.
