About the author

Born in Calcutta on October 10, 1862, and educated at Aberdeen, he built a respected career in British medicine, becoming a specialist in dermatology and a senior figure at Charing Cross Hospital. During the First World War he served in the Army Medical Services in France, and his public service later brought him national honors.

Alongside his medical career, he also wrote for general readers. His books include historical pieces such as Historical Sketches of Old Charing, showing a strong interest in London's past and an ability to turn careful research into accessible storytelling.

He died in London on October 18, 1922. Though best known professionally as a physician, his writing still offers a useful glimpse of the wide-ranging interests of an Edwardian doctor with a feel for history.
