About the author

Born in Redditch on July 15, 1857, James Henry Yoxall trained as a teacher and went on to become one of the most prominent figures in British education. He served as General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers from 1892 to 1924, and he was knighted in 1909.

Yoxall also had a long career in public life as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Nottingham West from 1895 to 1918. Alongside that work, he wrote books that brought specialist interests to general readers in a straightforward, approachable way.

For readers today, he is especially interesting as a writer who paired wide knowledge with an easy, helpful style. Whether writing about collecting or other subjects, he came across as someone who wanted to make expertise feel welcoming rather than exclusive.
