About the author

Born around 1704, Sir Charles Knowles rose through the Royal Navy and became known as an experienced officer during the War of Jenkins' Ear, the War of the Austrian Succession, and the Seven Years' War. He later became Admiral of the Fleet and was created a baronet, marking a career that combined military service, status, and public influence.

Knowles was also active beyond ship command. He served as governor of Jamaica, linking his story to Britain’s colonial administration as well as its naval power. His career brought him into major imperial campaigns in the Caribbean and Atlantic world, where naval strength and politics were closely connected.

He died on December 9, 1777. Today he is remembered as a prominent 18th-century British naval figure whose life reflects both the reach of the Royal Navy and the wider history of the British Empire.
