Born on 2 December 1862, Sir Charles Edward Mallet was a British historian and Liberal politician. He studied at Balliol College, Oxford, and also worked in university extension teaching, bringing history to a wider audience beyond the traditional classroom.

As a writer, he is especially associated with The French Revolution and with A History of the University of Oxford. His historical work focused on major public events and institutions, and his background in teaching helped shape a direct, readable style.

Mallet also had a substantial public career. He served as Liberal MP for Plymouth from 1906 to 1910 and was knighted in 1917. He died on 21 November 1947, leaving behind a body of work that connects political experience with a lasting interest in history.
