About the author

Born in Surrey in 1835, he was educated at Eton and Haileybury before entering the Bengal Civil Service. Much of his working life was spent in India, where he served through the upheaval of the 1857 rebellion and later rose to senior administrative posts, including Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces and chief commissioner of Oudh.

Alongside his government career, he built a strong reputation as a man of letters. He wrote poetry, essays, and historical works, and is especially remembered for books such as Asiatic Studies and The Rise of the British Dominion in India. His writing often explored religion, empire, and the meeting of cultures, combining an administrator’s firsthand experience with a reflective, literary style.

After retiring from India service, he remained active in public and intellectual life in Britain. He died in 1911, leaving behind a body of work valued both for its historical perspective and for the thoughtful way it tried to understand the world he had governed and described.
