Siegfried Von Schultz

Known today for a rare surviving Edison studio recording, this early 20th-century performer is a fascinating voice from the dawn of sound media. Very little is documented about him, which gives the piece an unusual archival charm.

About the author

Project Gutenberg lists only one work under this name: Voice Trial - Kinetophone Actor Audition. The recording was made around 1913 at Edison's motion picture film studio in the Bronx, New York, and preserves a brief actor's voice test from the early days of synchronized sound experiments.

Archive and catalog records identify the piece as an unissued Edison wax cylinder master, and the National Park Service includes it among surviving motion-picture soundtracks and actor auditions from the Edison collection. Beyond that recording, reliable biographical details about Siegfried Von Schultz appear to be scarce, so it is safest to remember him as an early performer whose voice happened to survive when many others did not.
