About the author

Born Mary McNeill in Alabama in 1865, she later became known as Mary McNeil Fenollosa and published mainly as Sidney McCall. Her writing career included both novels and poetry, and she built a readership in the early decades of the twentieth century.

Her books are especially remembered for their rich settings. Some drew on Southern life, while others reflected her connection to Japan and introduced many American readers to Japanese-inspired stories and characters. Among her best-known works is The Breath of the Gods, and several of her novels were adapted for the screen.

She died in 1954, leaving behind a body of work that captures the tastes and curiosities of her era. Today, she remains of interest to readers drawn to forgotten popular fiction, women writers of the early 1900s, and stories that move between cultures.
