Sidney Farnsworth

1886–1926

An early 20th-century British artist, he worked across painting, sculpture, and illumination, then turned that hands-on knowledge into a practical book for students. His best-known work explores how the medieval art of illumination could still speak to modern makers.

About the author

Sidney Farnsworth was a British painter, sculptor, and illuminator active in the early 1900s. The dates commonly attached to him are 1886–1926, and surviving references describe him as an artist whose work moved between fine art and the decorative arts.

He is best known today for Illumination and Its Development in the Present Day, published in the early 1920s. In its preface, he explains that the book grew out of articles from Drawing and Design and that he wanted to write in a simple, practical way for younger students and working learners.

That clear, teaching-minded approach gives his work its lasting appeal. Rather than treating illumination only as a historical curiosity, Farnsworth presented it as a living craft, connecting medieval traditions with modern design, lettering, color, and book decoration.
