About the author

Born in Shanghai in 1912, Mu Shiying became one of the standout writers of China's New Sensationist school. He was especially known for modernist short stories that focused on urban experience, nightlife, and the fractured rhythms of a fast-changing city.

He published while still very young and became active in Shanghai's literary world in the 1930s, contributing to influential journals such as Les Contemporains. Readers and critics remember his fiction for its vivid sensory style and its close attention to modern city life.

Mu Shiying died in 1940 at just 28 years old. Despite his short life, he remains an important figure in twentieth-century Chinese literature and is still read as a key chronicler of cosmopolitan Shanghai.
