Born on September 27, 1901, in Xinghua, Fujian Province, he grew up in the church as the son of a Methodist pastor. Connections with missionaries helped him travel to the United States in 1920 for further study, a journey that shaped the next stage of his life.
He is remembered as John Sung, also known as Song Shangjie, a Chinese evangelist and Methodist preacher whose ministry became widely known in the 1930s and 1940s. His preaching drew large crowds, and his work extended beyond China into parts of Southeast Asia.
He died on August 18, 1944. Though his life was relatively short, he remains a notable figure in the history of modern Chinese Christianity and is still remembered for the energy and influence of his evangelistic work.
